Quarterbacks hold a decided edge in winning the Super Bowl MVP award. There have been 46 Super Bowl MVPs in 45 years (Dallas defensive linemen Harvey Martin and Randy White shared the award in Super Bowl XII), and 24 of them have been quarterbacks.

Huddle Up! Podcast: Brandon Weeden boosts his draft stock; Kellen Moore doesn’t

It’s the bye week before Super Bowl XLVI, but before you dive into all things Giants and Patriots in advance of their NFL title tilt next Sunday in Indianapolis, Sporting News’ Vinnie Iyer and Bill Bender give you the early breakdown of the big game in this week’s Huddle Up! podcast:

Also this week, Vinnie and Bill talk draft, first a super-early fantasy mock for 2012 with SN Fantasy Source expert George Winkler.

wpid 75507 650 3661 Huddle Up! Podcast: Brandon Weeden boosts his draft stock; Kellen Moore doesntRuss Lande says Brandon Weeden has plenty of talent and he has really impressed scouts at the Senior Bowl. (AP Photo)

Then we talk “real draft” with SN draft expert Russ Lande, who attended practices all week at the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala., and has insights on many of the big names:

Quarterback

Lande on Oklahoma State’s Brandon Weeden: “People came here thinking he was a player who had second- or third-round talent. Up close and personal, he hasn’t disappointed. He has a very strong arm and can make every throw. He hasn’t been outstanding, but he’s clearly been the best of the quarterbacks here—on either team.”

Michigan State’s Kirk Cousins: “He’s shown much better footwork than anticipated. Mechanics have been good, and he’s shown very good zip on the ball. He’s been very accurate and done a great job of fitting balls into spots. He’s had a very good week, and what’s most impressive about him is that each day he’s improved.”

Boise State’s Kellen Moore: “Unfortunately, it’s been a little disappointing when looking at Moore. He’s not really a strong-armed kid, and the ball doesn’t fly out of his hands. His accuracy is OK short, but when he has to throw more than 10 yards, his ball tends to hang in the air. He just doesn’t look like an NFL quarterback. He’s going to have to battle to be a backup or third quarterback in the league.”

Wisconsin’s Russell Wilson: “He’s got a great arm. The big issue he’s going to have to overcome is that he’s 5-10 1/2. The history of 5-10 1/2 quarterbacks is nonexistent.”

Running back

Boise State’s Doug Martin: “He’s jumped ahead of everyone else. He’s shown the quickness, agility and explosiveness. He changes directions in a heartbeat and is an decisive, aggressive runner.”

Washington’s Chris Polk: “He’s had a solid week, but not good. He’s OK in certain areas, when it comes to strength, power and running through some contact, but he’s not showing that quick burst you would like to see from a top-end back.”

Wide receiver

California’s Marvin Jones: “He’s been running great routes and catching deep passes every day. He’s actually beaten out (Nebraska cornerback prospect) Alfonzo Dennard three times on deep balls in one-on-one drills.”

Arizona’s Juron Criner: “He’s a big receiver (6-3, 220). He runs outstanding routes and uses his hands very well to stay free from coverage. He has remarkable hands catching the ball.”

Defensive end

North Carolina’s Quinton Coples: “What’s most impressive about Coples is that he’s a big, tall kid at 6-6 and almost 290 pounds, but he still has the athletic ability to beat offensive linemen on the pass rush around the corner. He’s very versatile, and the upside is outstanding. He’s a better prospect than Robert Quinn was and should go in the top 12 to 15 picks.”
