Where is he now? – Stephen McGee
Stephen McGeeís numbers as a quarterback for Burnet High School, a small community an hour northwest of Austin, were impressive.
He finished his high school career with a combined record of 36-5 and a 28-2 mark his junior and senior seasons. McGee and University of Texas receiver Jordan Shipley, a longtime friend, combined to lead Burnet to appearances in the 3A state finals in both 2002 and 2003. McGee finished his career with a 3A state-record 101 passing touchdowns and 8,256 passing yards. His senior year he completed 196 of 313 passes for 3,579 yards with 47 touchdowns and three interceptions. He earned the 3A Offensive Most Valuable Player in Texas.
With such a stellar high school career in such a football-rich state, McGee received scholarship offers from schools across the country. Eventually, it came down to threeóGeorgia, University of Texas and Texas A&M. He chose the Aggies.
In Aggieland, McGeeís career didnít take off. It wasnít his fault. He arrived the same time as new A&M head coach Dennis Franchione. Franchione opted for the option and McGee was in charge of running it. Despite limited throwing opportunities, when McGee did, he was effective. He eventually finished his career as the Aggies’ all-time leader in completion percentage (59.5), second in total offense (7,225 yards), fourth in passing yards (5,475) and third in rushing yards by a quarterback (1,750).
In addition to not having the opportunity to display his throwing skills at A&M, McGee suffered a shoulder injury that limited his playing time his senior season.
Despite those obstacles, McGee, through his faith, has managed to stay positive and overcome.
He was rewarded in the 2009 NFL Draft when the Cowboys selected him with their fourth-round pick. Currently, he sits on the bench behind Tony Romo and Jon Kitna.
What the future has in store for the kid from Burnet, no one is exactly sure. But there are countless fans in Burnet and College Station cheering on ìtheirî son who has overcome the odds thus far.
