Texas-Wyoming Game Recap

This season many of the so-called college football experts expect the University of Florida and the University of Texas to stay entrenched in their 1-2 poll rankings throughout the season and meet at the BCS national title game at the Rose Bowl. On Saturday in Wyoming, for one half the Longhorns didnít look like a team even destined for a mid-tier bowl game, much less the national championship.

With temps in the 50s, a bit breezy, and a hostile Wyoming crowd of less than 40,000, the Longhorns came out flat, and thatís putting it nicely. Texas quarterback Colt McCoy looked lost. On multiple occasions McCoy made throws that looked like a freshman, not a veteran quarterback who is the frontrunner for the Heisman Trophy this season.

The lowlight for McCoy came midway through the second quarter when the senior gunslinger was intercepted by Wyoming linebacker Weston Johnson, who was camped out in undisguised zone coverage.

The Longhorns collectively hit bottom with just under two minutes remaining in the half. With the Texas offense forced into another three-and-outófour of the first halfóWyoming special teamer Luke Ruff blocked John Goldís punt and Ghaali Muhammad took it six yards to give Wyoming its first lead of the game at 10-6.
It was the wakeup call the Longhorns hadnít received. Suddenly, the Longhorns had a change of attitude at altitude.

McCoy and the Texas offense went to work finishing out the first half with a six play, 70-yard touchdown drive that took just more than a minute and was capped off by a 25-yard strike from McCoy to receiver James Kirkendoll.
In the second half, the Longhorns picked up where they left off in the first scoring four more touchdowns including a pair of scoring throws from McCoy. The senior finished the game completing 30 of 47 passes for 337 yards, three TDs and one interception.
While the Longhorns cruised to a convincing 41-10 victory against an overmatched Wyoming squad, the slow start could be cause for concern for those back in Austin as it has been a trend of several Texas teams in years past.

Next week the Longhorns will have to get off to a much quicker start against the high-scoring Texas Tech air show that comes to town.
