Nate Newton. For Dallas Cowboys fans, the name evokes memories of the mammoth offensive lineman who was a six-time Pro Bowler that played for Dallas during the glorious 1990s. When he wasn’t mauling his opposing defensive lineman, he was smiling and providing comic relief for the cameras. Fast forward to 2009. There’s a new Newton making headlines today and he reminds you nothing of his father.

Tre Newton is a redshirt freshman running back at the University of Texas. In Texas’ 34-24 victory over Texas Tech, it was Newton who had 20 carries for 88 yards and helped keep the high-powered Red Raider offense on the sideline.  Read more...

It was a flashback to the 1980s and once the toughest Houston student ticket to find—Houston hosting Texas Tech. The old Southwest Conference days. This much-anticipated offensive display was everything it was cracked up to be as the Cougars scored with less than a minute to play to defeat the Red Raiders 29-28 in front of the largest crowd ever—32,114—at Robertson Stadium.

The 17th-ranked Cougars, ranked for the first time in 18 years, got on the board first when quarterback Case Keenum connected with James Cleveland for a six-yard touchdown to finish off an eight-play, 34-yard drive.  Read more...

Cowboys tickets are still hot tickets, just not as hot as the first game. Still, an impressive crowd of  90,000, a $1 billion state-of-the-art stadium, and all the football world watching isn’t inspiration enough—at least not for a half. That was exactly the case for the Dallas Cowboys offense on Monday night who failed to score in the first half against the Carolina Panthers and had to rely on a defensive score in the second half to pull off the 21-7 victory.

It was over before it ever started. All that remained was how many points the No. 2-ranked Texas Longhorns would score. In the end Texas won in an expected blowout, 64-7 over the UTEP Miners in front of 101,144 on Saturday.

After a pair of slow starts against Wyoming on the road and at home last week against Texas Tech, the Longhorns got off to a fast start against the Miners. After the Texas defense forced a fumble on UTEP’s opening possession, freshman running back Tre Newton capped off the four-play drive that covered 16 yards to put Texas ahead 7-0.  Read more...

For Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, it was exactly the game he dreamed it would be, with just one exception the ending. In a classic battle of two NFC East powers, the New York Giants spoiled the grand opening of the spectacular Cowboys Stadium as a record-crowd of 105,121 watched Giants kicker Lawrence Tynes convert a 37-yard field goal as time expired for a 33-31 victory on Sunday night.  Read more...
